FORMER FEMALE EXECUTIVE SETTLES EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION SUIT AGAINST DOLBY LABORATORIES
SAN DIEGO, CA -December 12, 2006 -- Handal & Associates today announced the settlement of Tan v. Dolby Laboratories (NYSE: DLB), which was pending in the Federal District Court in and for the Northern District of California. The case was amicably settled and dismissed by Tan.
The complaint, which was filed in 2005 made claims against Dolby for sexual discrimination, wrongful termination in violation of public policy, and retaliation arising out of certain employment actions taken by Dolby in connection with Dolby's Hong Kong office. The case was resolved after a series of negotiations conducted over several months. The terms of the confidential settlement are undisclosed.
The case raised interesting issues related to the rights of foreign nationals, working for US multinational companies in offices outside of the United States. “Foreign employees have many of the same rights as domestic employees under Title VII and various other State laws that prohibit discriminatory and illegal employment actions” said Pamela Chalk of Handal & Associates. “The protections of US law extend to all offices of US Multinational companies; domestic or foreign.”
